Preparing NCF for Fire Safety

To prepare its community to be ‘fire safety smart’, the Naga College Foundation has conducted a Fire Safety Seminar last April 28, 2010 at the Science & Technology AVR.  Invited speaker was SFO3 Ronald E. Mojica of the Bureau of Fire Protection Naga.

The seminar did not only tackle the HOW’s during a fire emergency but SFO3 Mojica made sure that his audience understood even the materials a fire marshal would use, the specific laws and even the penalties involved when not following the set fire safety regulations.

The most common causes of fire are (1) Electrical Short Circuit, (2) Accidental Fires, (3) Insurance Fraud and (4) Negligence.  Here are some tips to prevent a blaze:
    •    Make sure your electrical appliances are without loose or frayed cords or plugs
    •    Never overuse an extension cord nor have your outlets overloaded with plugs
    •    Make sure your LPG Tank (and its matching hose) has no leak
    •    Blown fuses should not be replaced with coins, wires or any other metal
    •    Know your BFP Hotline – for naga its 473-8472/73; 811-6175 or call 117
Standard response time for the Bureau of Fire Protection (provided there is no traffic) is 7 minutes.

In case of fire, it is important that one should keep down on the floor to avoid inhalation of smoke.  If possible cover your mouth and nose with a wet towel or handkerchief.  Try to reach the nearest exit.  Don’t use the elevator but only the stairs.  If the stairs cannot be used, leave the building via a fire escape.  Don’t attempt to return to save your personal things or valuables.  Try to be calm and avoid panicking.  This is to keep your presence of mind.

The NCF Administration was headed by Atty. Carlo C. Villanueva Jr., Director for Total Quality Management System and Ms. Ann V. Hidalgo, Vice President for Administration.  During their individual messages, both emphasized on the importance of prevention.  As it is said ‘An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure’.  Both expect the cooperation of the whole NCF Community to have a fire safe NCF.
